Cancer is a disease caused by the abnormal growth of body cell tissue becoming cancer cells. Cancer cell can spread to other body parts. These continuously growing cells become lumps known as tumor.

At 2003, WHO (World Health Organization) stated that cancer constitutes as a very serious health disease because number of patients increase by about 20% every year.

Breast cancer, the second highest killer after womb cancer, also experiences significant increases every year.

• In USA, 180,000 new cases per year
• In the Netherlands, 91 new cases for every 100,000 people
• In Indonesia itself, it is estimated that 10 out of every 100,000 people have developed breast cancer.

The exact cause of this disease is not yet known. However there are 3 potential factors:
1. Endocrine factor
2. Environment factor
3. Genetically factor

In addition, in Indonesia there exists several factors causing late medical treatment or breast cancer prevention in Indonesia. 70% of breast cancer sufferers visit doctors or hospitals when conditions are already at advanced stage.

Other matters constituting late factors of sufferers are:
• Fear of operation, chemotherapy and radiation
• Still believing in traditional medication, shaman, paranormal or “wise man”
• Do not believe that breast cancer can be cured
• Unawareness of the disease they are suffering
• Socio-economic
• Unknowing of the need to undergo routine breast examination

Matters like the above increase the numbers and seriousness of breast cancer sufferers.
